SENSOR TECHNOLOGY & COST OF OWNERSHIP

ESS’ Master Seismic Controller utilizes a programmable tri-axial seismic switch that serves a broad spectrum of applications, including: earthquake actuated shutoff of combustible gases, toxic gases, flammable liquids, high-speed elevators, water treatment & distribution systems, jet fuel delivery systems and more.  Further, the seismic switch can be readily functionally tested and/or calibrated in the field with the removal of a single mounting bolt and a plug-in (not hardwired) mating connector. Other seismic controller manufacturers bolt their sensors in the pipeline or to the ‘backplane’ of the seismic controller panel and ‘claim’ that their mechanical unit never needs calibration. Bolting an ASCE 25-97 sensor in a pipeline or to the backplane of an electrical panel is generally non-compliant with published ASCE 25-97 criteria:

ASCE 25-97, 1.2.2 Mounting: This standard applies to devices that are to be mounted…in a manner as to be sensitive to earthquake ground motions and not motions that might result from the dynamic responses of structures, equipment or other appurtenances.”

Other features include vector triggering, impulse vibration filter, peak ground acceleration data, multiple alarm outputs, SCADA ready, remote reset, sensor self-diagnostics with failure alarm and low voltage alarm.  Annual inspection & testing takes about 1/2 hour for the sensor and 1 hour to 2 hours for the entire system (actuators, 24Vdc back-up power, alarm signal verification, etc.)
