A M6.7 earthquake struck the San Fernando Valley in Southern California on January 17, 1994. The earthquake damaged
residential and civil structures throughout the region. Providence St. Joseph Medical Center (Burbank) installed an
ESS MSC-U Master Seismic Controller in 1992. The MSC-U seismic control unit automaticlly shutoff the large natural gas line
feeding the hospital boilers.
Once facilities personnel had inspected the central boilers and associated piping, they were
able to safely re-start the boilers.
